Introduction to THEMIS PR3 – Case studies videos

The case study videos of the THEMIS project serve to explore in detail climate-related best practises in different countries—, especially in Turkey, Spain, Slovenia and France. These videos show real-life applications of sustainable initiatives, climate solutions and successful strategies implemented in different geographical and cultural contexts. The case study videos complement the game platform by providing a tangible link between virtual learning and real-life applications, enriching climate education for students. Each video focuses on the main topics and sub-modules of the THEMIS project and provides a rich source of practical examples and success stories. While the game platform focuses on interactive challenges and activities, the case study videos provide a real-life dimension to the theoretical knowledge acquired through the platform. You can integrate extracts from the case study videos into the game platform to increase engagement. For example, unlock a video as a reward for completing a challenging level, incentivising students to explore the impact of their virtual actions on the real world. You can also use the insights from the case study videos as inspiration for new challenges within the game platform. This allows you to bridge the gap between virtual scenarios and real-world applications and make the learning experience more coherent.
How to use the videos:

➢ Use the case study videos in specific lessons to illustrate the practical applications of the climate-related concepts covered in the infographics and game platform. For example, after discussing a sub-module on ecological economics, show a corresponding case study video to deepen students’ understanding.

➢ Use the case study videos to highlight the cultural and geographical factors that influence climate change mitigation in different regions. This can broaden students’ perspectives and promote a global understanding of climate challenges and solutions.

➢ Showcase the success stories and positive outcomes presented in the case study videos to inspire and motivate students. These real-world examples can demonstrate the impact of individual and collective efforts in addressing climate issues.

➢ Encourage students to critically analyse the case study videos. Encourage discussions about the effectiveness of the strategies implemented, the potential challenges and the lessons that can be learnt. This can improve critical thinking skills and promote meaningful class discussions.

➢ Facilitate comparative analysis by showing case study videos from different countries. This allows students to understand the differences in approaches to climate action based on unique regional contexts.
As a result, you can use the resources there to complement each other:

➢ Sequential Integration:start with the infographics, move on to the game platform for interactive learning and finish with real-life applications through the best practise videos.

➢ Thematic Integration: Select a specific topic or sub-module from all three deliverables to create a targeted learning unit.

➢ Project-Based Learning: Encourage your students to work collaboratively on projects using information from all three outcomes to promote critical thinking and creativity.

VIDEO ON GOOD PRACTISES: “LES RETOURNÉES” – WASHING OF RETURNABLE BOTTLES

This video can be used as additional teaching material to the handbook chapter “Sustainability”. It shows an example of a measure that can contribute to greater sustainability. The non-governmental organisation “Les retournées” (The returnable bottles), based in Lahonce, uses the example of bottles and other containers to demonstrate why reuse is even better than recycling. Pierre explains how the method of reusing containers saves energy and significantly reduces waste and pollution.

VIDEO ON GOOD PRACTISES: “BIO-DIVERS-CITÉ – BIODIVERSITY IN THE CITY”

This video can be used as additional teaching material to the manual chapter “The interdependence of living beings”. Almost everywhere on earth, species are becoming extinct and biodiversity is declining, but few people know what they can do as individuals to prevent the loss of biodiversity. Bio Divers Cité, a non-governmental organisation in Biarritz, wants the most urbanised areas of the city to become greener. Elise, the co-founder, explains how the team is working to preserve wild animals and plants in urban areas and how everyone can contribute.

VIDEO ON GOOD PRACTISES: “RAISING CATTLE AND SHEEP FOR 100% ORGANIC MEAT”

This video can be used as additional teaching material to the manual chapter “Intensive Agriculture” in which highlights all the negative consequences of agribusiness and factory farming. The example of Théo shows us how sustainable animal husbandry and meat production can be. On his farm in Briscous, he runs an animal-friendly husbandry programme with exclusively green fodder as an alternative to industrial intensive livestock farming.

This video can be used as additional teaching material to the handbook chapter “The environmental impact of the fashion industry”, which describes the disastrous effects of ‘fast fashion’. Fashion is a topical issue that particularly appeals to young people. That is why it is so important to raise awareness and show sustainable alternatives. Thiane, the clothing brand founded by Roxane in Biarritz, is an example of an alternative to fast fashion that works sustainably by collecting fabric samples from the fashion industry and reusing them to create patchwork designs.

VIDEO ON GOOD PRACTISES: “UNLOCKING SLOVENIA’S CIRCULAR ECONOMY: TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO BLACK GOLD”

The circular economy is a top priority in Slovenia and requires a shift from linear to circular development models. This transition promotes resource efficiency, reduces environmental impact, and increases overall well-being by reusing waste, such as organic compost, to enrich the soil and support plant growth, which exemplifies the circular idea. This video is relevant to the topic “Circular economy” in PR1 and covers the Challenge box titled “Circular economy” in PR2.
